Technology

We produce our detailed data sets with the QEMSCAN automated mineralogy platform. Developed by our technology partner FEI, it is the most powerful mineralogical measuring tool available, producing high resolution petrographic data for accurate rock analysis. QEMSCAN is an acronym for Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Technically superior to other analytical tools it can process large volumes of samples in a short space of time. This helps you make more informed business decisions during the investment, exploration and production stages of projects.

Sample preparation

Sample preparation

Through years of intense R&D, Rocktype has developed several uniquely efficient sample preparation techniques. Our high-quality, patented process enables an order of magnitude higher throughput with micron precision.

Resin blocks

Resin blocks

All rock, sand and cutting materials are set in resin blocks under high pressure. This forces resin into the pore-space, enabling precise identification of pores. Once set, the pucks are ground and polished to a micron smooth surface before QEMSCAN or Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Analysis.

Whole rock sample

Whole rock

Core and outcrop rock samples are cut to size, resin is then applied at high pressure and the resulting puck is cut and polished.

A minimum of 10 g of whole rock is required per sample

Drill cuttings

Drill cuttings

Wet cuttings are washed and dried then set in resin, ground and polished.

A minimum of 10 g of dry or 50 g of wet cuttings is required per sample

“Our partnership with Rocktype is an important step in further developing use cases and technologies that will ultimately drive economic drilling, completions and recovery decisions”
